I remember in my last year of junior high, my friends and I, who were all from a lower class background, would meet together to study literature, politics and art and encourage each other to excel. I was lucky to be enrolled in a good high school. Some of these friends boastingly said that one day when we become successful, we should come back to serve the as we’re from this background.
At the end of last year, I saw these friends at a class reunion. Each one of them has grown accustomed to the lifestyle of the middle class with the exception of myself, and I was the only one serving the underprivileged. My position as one of the ministry directors at CCHC keeps me in the office, planning and strategizing, but I prefer rolling up my sleeves and helping out in the community center, filling out forms for the visitors, translating English letters and even teaching the two-hour computer lessons. It’s not an easy task working in the community center, as one must give up a life of ease and be in the community, in order to empathize with their sorrow and joy.
Our job is to serve as a bridge for the community to come to Christ. To reach that goal, we need to share each other’s burdens, support one another and be a team player. When a family in need gets physical help from CCHC, then turns to church for meeting their spiritual needs; or when a project progresses from an idea to full realization, my heart is full of joy and I give praise to the Lord. Though I am nothing but dust, He does not forsake me but uses me to share in the victorious ministry of CCHC.
By the Lord’s leading, I came to join the great team of CCHC to learn how to serve. I’ve never worked in any community service organization before. Therefore, I knew nothing about the social welfare system such as the living subsidies of low-income households, unemployment allowance, retirement and insurance coverage, financing... However, God’s grace is sufficient. He brought experienced volunteers that have substantial knowledge in these areas. Now the community service center in Oakland offers three kinds of services: 1) Professional skill training, 2) Counseling and information, and 3) Fellowship and local activities. We also organize seminars and evangelistic meetings to share the love and grace of Jesus Christ, and Christian values. As the theme of our gospel camp this summer testified, we “do all this for the sake of the gospel, that we may share in its blessings.”(I Cor. 9:23)
In the past five years, I’ve witnessed the transformation of CCHC ministry. For example, the San Francisco office expanded from 400 square feet to 3,000 square feet. In the past, not many people knew about what CCHC did, but now when the name CCHC is mentioned, many people would automatically say, “Oh, I’ve been there. They like to help the community.” Sometimes I would hear people say that they got the information from the Herald Monthly. I want to thank God for the opportunity to learn and grow here, though admittedly I am not fully capable. I’m also thrilled by the fact that many of my friends have committed to serve at CCHC. My abilities are limited, therefore I often invite volunteers to come help out at CCHC. When they come to volunteer and experience God, their spiritual life is renewed. My heart is always amazed by the wondrous work of the Lord.
Working in the CCHC Community Center exposes me to different kinds of social problems and welfare issues, and challenges me to solve many situations with people from diverse backgrounds. The most challenging tasks among these are to improve on my communication skills. My involvement in the distribution of Herald Monthly also takes much of my energy. But thankfully, in my second year, I became more familiar with the social welfare system and the distribution of Herald Monthly has gone on track. As I look back at my time here, I can recall many personal challenges such as my financial problems and the theft of my car. But praise the Lord! By the prayers and financial aid offered by my fellow brothers and sisters, my financial difficulty was solved and my car was miraculously found! These incidents are all great encouragements to me from which I’ve learn to trust in the Lord and His promises. Indeed, the Lord answers
I’ve only been at CCHC for six months. The week before the publication of the Herald Monthly is my major crunch time at work. The design tasks are endless and sometimes I need to continue even after I go home. However, I feel satisfied working here because I’m grateful to God for the privilege to work in a ministry I enjoy. I even switched my major to graphic design in order to learn and equip myself more. During the past six months, I almost quit once due to personal frustrations but my team leader never gave up on me. Instead, she unceasingly cared for and encouraged me to gain self-confidence. Though I’m new, I love to grow and serve the Lord at CCHC.
